Repository Policy

Frontiers in Business and AI supports the widest possible dissemination and preservation of scholarly research. Authors may deposit and make available all versions of their manuscripts in repositories of their choice without an embargo period.

1. Permitted Versions

Authors may deposit the following manuscript versions:

Submitted Version

The version originally submitted to the journal before peer review, also commonly referred to as a preprint or submitted manuscript.

Accepted Manuscript

The version accepted for publication after peer review and revision but before the publisher’s final copyediting, typesetting and formatting.

Version of Record

The final, formally published version of the article, including the journal’s final formatting, citation details and publication information.

No embargo period applies to any of these versions.

2. Permitted Repositories and Platforms

Authors may deposit permitted manuscript versions in:

  • Institutional repositories.

  • Subject or disciplinary repositories.

  • General-purpose research repositories.

  • Funder-designated repositories.

  • Government or national repositories.

  • Preprint servers.

  • Research data repositories.

  • The author’s personal website.

  • The author’s institutional profile.

  • Non-commercial academic networking platforms.

  • Any other lawful repository that provides appropriate bibliographic and licensing information.

Authors are encouraged to use established repositories that provide persistent identifiers, stable access, clear version information and long-term preservation.

3. Deposit Timing

Authors may deposit the submitted version at any time, including before submission to the journal.

The accepted manuscript may be deposited immediately after acceptance.

The Version of Record may be deposited immediately upon publication.

Frontiers in Business and AI does not impose any embargo period on repository deposits.

4. Conditions for Deposit

When depositing a manuscript, authors should clearly identify the version being made available.

The deposited record should include, where applicable:

  • The article title.

  • The full names of all authors.

  • The name of the journal.

  • The volume, issue, year and page range or article number.

  • The Digital Object Identifier, where available.

  • A link to the official published article.

  • The applicable copyright and licensing information.

  • A statement identifying whether the deposited file is a submitted manuscript, accepted manuscript or Version of Record.

The deposited manuscript must not be presented in a way that misleads readers about its publication status.

5. Citation of the Version of Record

When an accepted manuscript or Version of Record is deposited, authors should include the complete citation of the formally published article.

The following statement may be used:

“This article was published in Frontiers in Business and AI. The final Version of Record is available at: [ARTICLE DOI OR PERMANENT URL].”

Where a preprint was deposited before publication, authors are encouraged to update the preprint record after publication by adding the final citation and a link to the Version of Record.

6. Copyright and Licence

Authors retain copyright in articles published by Frontiers in Business and AI.

Unless otherwise stated, the Version of Record is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0):

https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Under this licence, users may copy, share, distribute, adapt and reproduce the article in any medium or format, including through repositories, provided that:

  • Appropriate credit is given to the author or authors.

  • Frontiers in Business and AI is identified as the original journal of publication.

  • A link to the Creative Commons licence is provided.

  • Any changes are clearly indicated.

  • Third-party material excluded from the Creative Commons licence is not reused without permission.

7. Third-Party Material

Some articles may contain images, tables, datasets, figures, text or other material owned by third parties.

Third-party material is covered by the article’s Creative Commons licence only where this is clearly stated. If a credit line identifies separate copyright or licensing conditions, authors must comply with those conditions before depositing or reusing the material.

Authors are responsible for obtaining any permission required to include third-party material in a repository copy.

8. Preprints

Posting a manuscript on a recognised preprint server does not normally constitute prior publication and does not prevent consideration by Frontiers in Business and AI.

Authors must disclose the existence of a preprint during submission and provide its persistent link or identifier.

Preprints should clearly state that they have not yet undergone formal peer review. After publication, authors should update the preprint record with the citation and link to the Version of Record.

The journal may request disclosure of material changes between the preprint and submitted manuscript where relevant to the editorial assessment.

9. Accepted Manuscripts

Authors may deposit the accepted manuscript immediately after acceptance.

The deposited accepted manuscript should:

  • State that it has been accepted for publication.

  • Identify Frontiers in Business and AI as the journal of publication.

  • Include the final article citation when available.

  • Link to the Version of Record after publication.

  • Avoid using the journal’s final typeset layout unless the deposited file is the Version of Record.

10. Versions of Record

Authors may deposit the publisher’s final PDF or HTML Version of Record immediately upon publication.

The Version of Record should be deposited without removing or changing:

  • The journal title.

  • Author information.

  • The Digital Object Identifier.

  • Copyright information.

  • Creative Commons licence information.

  • Correction, retraction or other publication notices.

  • Other information forming part of the official scholarly record.

11. Research Data and Supplementary Materials

Authors are encouraged to deposit research data, analytical code, protocols, instruments and supplementary materials in an appropriate trusted repository whenever ethical and legally permissible.

Repository records should use persistent identifiers where available and should be cited in the article.

Where public access is restricted because of privacy, informed consent, confidentiality, security, commercial or legal requirements, authors should explain the restriction in the article’s Data Availability Statement and describe any controlled-access procedure.

12. Corrections and Retractions

Where a deposited article is subsequently corrected, authors should update the repository record to include a link to the correction notice.

Where an article is retracted, authors should not remove the deposited record solely to conceal the retraction. The repository record should be updated to state clearly that the article has been retracted and should link to the journal’s retraction notice.

Where an Expression of Concern has been issued, the repository record should link to that notice.

These requirements help preserve an accurate and transparent scholarly record.

13. Commercial Repositories

Deposit in a commercial platform is permitted where:

  • The author has the legal right to make the relevant version available.

  • The platform respects the applicable Creative Commons licence.

  • The deposited record correctly identifies the manuscript version.

  • The platform does not remove or misrepresent copyright, attribution or licensing information.

  • Third-party rights and confidentiality obligations are respected.

14. Repository Metadata

Authors and repository managers are encouraged to include complete and accurate metadata, including:

  • Article title.

  • Author names.

  • Author affiliations.

  • ORCID identifiers, where available.

  • Abstract.

  • Keywords.

  • Journal title.

  • Publisher name.

  • ISSN.

  • Volume and issue.

  • Publication date.

  • Page range or article number.

  • Digital Object Identifier.

  • Copyright holder.

  • Creative Commons licence.

  • Manuscript version.

Accurate metadata improves discovery, citation, indexing and long-term access.

15. Author Responsibility

Authors are responsible for ensuring that repository deposits:

  • Comply with applicable copyright and licensing requirements.

  • Do not disclose confidential or restricted information.

  • Do not infringe third-party rights.

  • Accurately identify the deposited manuscript version.

  • Include the official article citation and link when available.

  • Are updated if the published article is corrected or retracted.

16. No Deposit Fees

Frontiers in Business and AI does not charge authors a fee for depositing submitted manuscripts, accepted manuscripts or Versions of Record in repositories.

Repository deposit and self-archiving do not affect editorial evaluation, peer review, acceptance or publication decisions.
